So back a few years ago when I was on vacation in Hawaii, there was a guy at the hotel playing the ukulele and so it just sounded like the happiest sound to me, like the funniest instrument ever. And so I got one and I learned to play it and I was hoping, you know, that I would play it for you guys at a concert someday but I knew, I knew that if I was going to play it for you guys it would have to be on a song that was incredibly happy. And you know, that would have to be something about falling in love or… having the best first date ever. Happy things. You know, things that make you feel fearless.

It was a Thursday morning. You were wearing that ratty little Dartmouth t-shirt you look so good in. The one with hole in the back of the neck. You’d just washed your hair and you smelled like some kind of flower. I was running late for surgery. You said you were gonna see me later. Then you leaned to me, you put your hand on my chest and you kissed me. Soft. It was quick. Kind of like a habit. You know, like we’d do it every day for the rest of our lives. You went back to reading the newspaper and I went to work. That was the last time we kissed.
